In this article, I want to share with you 5 mistakes that you don't want to make on your CV.
I have over 10 years of experience in reviewing CV's and I can tell you that these mistakes will cost you your interview, so, happy reading.
1. Formatting
It's a no brainer, your CV is a reflection of you, if your formatting is a mess well how does that reflect you? Make sure that you have consistent font and spacing throughout your entire CV document (and please no spelling mistakes either).
2. Gaps
If you started in a job in May 2015 and finished in May 2016 and you didn't start your next job until January 2017, then I want to know what you were doing in that gap, please explain that in your CV.
3. No Photo's Please
It really isn't appropriate to have a photo on your CV, in my experience it negatively affects an employers unconscious bias (an unconscious positive or negative judgement). These days, employers will check on LinkedIn for further info on a person including what they look like.
4. Check Your Email
Please don't use an email address like chur@gmail.com or your Mum's - gmail accounts are free to setup so have one that is simply yourname@gmail.com
5. Don't Lie
NZ is small and the employment industry is smaller, employers share information all the time so before you say that you were a supervisor when you were actually a labourer or that you resigned but you were fired - please don't, it's highly likely that you will get found out!
I wish you all the best in making it to the interview stage! If you think you might need a little extra help, I offer a full CV and cover letter service where I work with you to get these documents right!
